Centennial Gala

The key event in the Virginia Section’s Celebration will be a Centennial Gala evening event. A Subcommittee has been established under the Virginia Section Board of Directors (BOD) to plan and execute the event. The Section plans to host the Gala at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Cocktail hour starts at 5:00 P.M. with dinner at 6:00 P.M. followed by the Keynote Speech, Awards Ceremony and Dancing and Socializing.  Vendors, the D.J. and other setup volunteers will be able to begin setup starting at 2:00 P.M. A contract has been signed with Omni and the BOD has unanimously approved the Overall Plan & Budget and a deposit has been made. Some rooms at the Omni will be available at the Gala rate of $169.00 per night for that Friday and Saturday under the title “Virginia Section Centennial Gala”. We can add more rooms up until the Omni is completely booked for those nights, than prevailing rates will be in effect. Valet parking for a fee of $20.00 per nite (normally $27.00) is available for overnight guests. There is also an hourly rate available for those choosing to not stay over.  I suggest staying over to enjoy some of the great features of Richmond, Virginia.  Just go online and take a look around.

We have already reached out to the soon to be 2022 ASCE President, Dr. Dennis D. Truax, PE, DEE, DWRE, FASCE, FNSPE; White Endowed Chair, Head & Prof., Civil & Environmental Engineering, Mississippi State University to be our keynote speaker. Hopefully he and his wife Jeanie Ann (Knable) Truax, will be able to attend.  Dr. Truax is a 1976 graduate of Virginia Tech.

We will be limiting awards to one hour.  We will recognize mostly larger engineering, consulting and contractor firms that meet a set of criteria which has yet to be developed.  If you would like to help in this award effort, please feel free to send me an email at: pricebs@comcast.net with your name, address, phone number and email address.  Each of our seven Branches will also have an awards ceremony at other times during the year to recognize firms and government officials they work with in their geographical area. We are considering awards for other categories of recipients at the Gala and Branches, but the details are under consideration. We will have two very special awards that I hope to keep secret until the night of the Gala event.

For this Gala, we want to recognize our past and our future as well.  That is why all Civil Engineers in Virginia and those that live in the Virginia portion of the National Capital Section (NCS) are invited to attend this once-in-a-hundred-year event. Plus, we would like to extend an invitation to the members of the ASCE’s Institutes and employees and officers of the National HQ ASCE living in Virginia  and in the same NCS areas. We are all a part of the foundation upon which we will help America and especially Virginia, reach its fullest potential and your attendance will be warmly and graciously welcomed.

So, mark your calendar for March 26, 2022. You do not want to miss this opportunity to honor our profession while we celebrate and socialize. If you are a member of ASCE from another part of the country or world, and you happen to be in the area for business or a meeting and you want to see how ASCE members from the South throw a party, you are welcome to attend.
