Centennial Gala

The key event of the Virginia Section’s Centennial Celebration will be a Centennial Gala evening event. A Subcommittee has been established under the Virginia Section Board of Directors (BOD) to plan and execute the event. The Section plans to host the Gala at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Registration begins at 4:30 P.M. with Cocktails at 5:00 P.M. and dinner at 6:00 P.M. followed by the Keynote Speech, Awards Ceremony and Dancing and Socializing.  The Photographer, D.J. and other setup volunteers will be able to begin setup starting at 2:00 P.M. A contract has been signed with Omni and the BOD has unanimously approved the Overall Plan & Budget and a deposit has been made. Some rooms at the Omni will be available at the Gala rate of $169.00 per night for that Friday and Saturday under the title “ASCE GALA”. We can add more rooms up until the Omni is completely booked for those nights, than prevailing rates will be in effect. Valet parking for a fee of $20.00 per night (normally $27.00) is available for overnight guests. There is also an hourly rate available for those choosing to not stay over.  I suggest staying over to enjoy some of the great features of Richmond, Virginia.  Just go online and take a look around.

The 2022 ASCE President, Dr. Dennis D. Truax, PE, DEE, DWRE, FASCE, FNSPE; White Endowed Chair, Head & Prof., Civil & Environmental Engineering, Mississippi State University will be our keynote speaker and will be accompanied by his wife Jeanie Ann (Knable) Truax. Dr. Truax is a 1976 graduate of Virginia Tech. President Truax and Jeanie will take a five-day driving tour prior to the GALA and visit six colleges/universities that the VA Section supports for a “Meet-And-Greet” with students, faculty, ASCE Branch members, and local engineering/government/materials/construction employees. And, we may have a “Meet & Greet” with the Truax’s at the OMNI on Sunday, November 27, 2022 between the hours of 11:30 AM and 3:00 PM with a light lunch provided by the VA Section if enough people who are staying over and those that live locally are interested. More on this later.

The Virginia Section will be presenting awards, as yet to be determined, to individuals/firms. There will be a very special award to be keep secret until the night of the GALA event. Each of the seven VA Section Branches will also have their own Centennial Celebration with an awards ceremony at other times during the year to recognize firms and government officials they work with in their geographical area.

For this GALA, we want to recognize our past and our future as well.  That is why all Civil Engineers in Virginia and those that live in the Virginia portion of the National Capital Section (NCS) are invited to attend this once-in-a-hundred-year event. Plus, we would like to extend an invitation to the members of the ASCE’s Institutes and employees and officers of the National HQ ASCE working in Virginia and in the same NCS areas. We are all a part of the foundation upon which we will help America and especially Virginia, reach its fullest potential and your attendance will be warmly and graciously welcome. If you are a member of ASCE from another part of the country or world, and you happen to be in the area for business or a meeting and you want to see how ASCE members from the South throw a party, you are welcome to attend. And always, remember that, “Civil Engineers Are Unbounded By Space Or Time”

So, mark your calendar for March 26, 2022. You do not want to miss this opportunity to honor our profession while we celebrate and socialize. We have plenty of space for anyone who wants to attend and a great time will be had by all.
