Civil Engineering Student Club at Liberty University

Liberty University (LU) started the residential delivery of a BS in Civil Engineering program in Fall 2019, with an enrollment of 12 students.  This is the ninth engineering program at LU. A Civil Engineering Student Club (CESC) was begun on February 6, 2020 with a slate of officers selected.  The club had a full schedule of activities planned but, the pandemic hit, LU closed on Monday, March 16, and everything was turned upside-down and put on hold.  Classes resumed in Fall 2020 with the wearing of masks and social distancing, with an enrollment of 47 students.  Moreo...

Crozet Tunnel

One of Virginia's contributions to engineering is the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel. Nestled in Rockfish Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Crozet Tunnel was the longest railroad tunnel, at 4,270 feet, in the United States of its time. Claudius Crozet, French Civil Engineer, both designed and constructed the tunnel. Construction on the tunnel started in 1850 and represents the culmination of civil engineering technology based on manual drilling methods. Virginias Student Chapter Roundup

The student chapter awards were announced on April 19, 2021 and our Virginia Section Student Chapters received some major compliments. Virginia Military Institute (VMI) received the Certificate of Commendation, which only 5% of the Student Chapters received this nomination. Old Dominion University and University of Virginia received Honorable Mention. This award is given to the top third of Student Chapters, based on their Annual Report score. Centennial Gala

The key event in the Virginia Section’s Celebration will be a Centennial Gala evening event. A Subcommittee has been established under the Virginia Section Board of Directors (BOD) to plan and execute the event. The Section plans to host the Gala at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, March 26, 2022.
